Expert predicts the demise of SEO
An online marketing expert has suggested that search engine optimisation (SEO) is no longer that important for the industry.
Writing on the marketingpilgrim.com site, Greg Howlett boldly stated that SEO could well be a "dying industry".
He explained that the idea had only ever worked because "search engines were not advanced enough to always show relevant information". However, as these search engines have advanced, SEO has become less important.
Now, Mr Howlett said search engines have become "too smart and they have a different agenda".
Instead of wanting to reward companies who best understand SEO, the search engines want to promote the "best" firms in the sector.
"Do you think Google wants to reward the SEO contortions of unknown companies and affiliates with lots of free business?" Mr Howlett added.
He predicted that search engines would become increasingly proficient at filtering results to offer users the best returns. They will be able to select "the companies that have strong brands and lots of business".
"If you are not in the top ten of your industry, you had better find a way to get there in a hurry if you want to be on the first page of Google," Mr Howlett concluded.
Recently, a court in the US decided that metatagging does not have an impact on SEO.
