Google dominates European search in March

New figures have confirmed Google's dominance in the European search market.

The latest data from comScore showed that Google sites controlled 79 per cent of the European search market in March.

In total, the search engine performed more than 19 billion searches during the month, eclipsing its rivals.

Its closet competitor in Europe, eBay, reported just 752 million searches, while Yahoo! could only manage 486 million.

"With nearly 80 per cent of all searches conducted in March, Google is far and away the leading search property in Europe," explained Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore.

"However, we are seeing key local players show leadership in Eastern Europe where English is spoken less than in Western markets."

Indeed, the report showed that Russian search engine Yandex controlled 2.2 per cent of searches, more than Yahoo! (2.1 per cent) and Microsoft (1.9 per cent).

"With Russia's online population now the fastest growing in Europe, it is likely that some of these local search engines will continue to gain traction and market share," Mr Flanaga concluded.ADNFCR-1536-ID-18584918-ADNFCR
