Online marketers 'need to monitor social network sites'

A new study has demonstrated just how important it is becoming for online marketers to monitor and make use of social media sites.

The study, which was carried out by Society for New Communications Research, was seen by the clickz.com site and reportedly showed that 72 per cent of consumers used social media sites to carry out research about a company's reputation for customer care prior to buying something.

In addition, three quarters (74 per cent) said they made purchases based on recommendations from social networking sites.

Finally, the research highlighted how online markets needed to work to protect their brand image on social networking sites. Over half (59 per cent) of consumers revealed they regularly "vent" anger about poor customer service on these sites.

According to the website, Dr Ganim Nora Barnes, senior fellow of the Society for New Communications Research, said consumers "will not support companies with poor customer care reputations, and they will talk about all of this openly with others via multiple online vehicles".
