Pay per click for Google dropped in Jan
Fewer people are clicking on the internet advertisements that make up most of Google's profits, according recent figures.
A study by internet research firm comScore has that US users of the online search leader clicked on 532 million adverts in January, down 0.3 per cent from the previous year.
Every time a user clicks on one of the online marketing messages which appear next to Google's search results, the search engine is paid by the advertisers.
Robert Peck, an analyst with search engine marketers Bear Stearns, said: "While this is one data point for domestic google.com only and from one source, which may or may not be accurate, it is a concerning data point and somewhat reflects what we have heard from search engine manufacturers - that they were not seeing a high volume of clicks from consumers, possibly due to the economic slowdown."
Google's shares dropped by 4.57 per cent yesterday (26th February) from $464.19, down $22.25.
