Surfers stop at first page, says SEO research
Online marketers be warned, search engine users typically click results on the first page of search results, according to new research.
A study, conducted by iProspect, has revealed that this trend is increasing, with 62 per cent admitting to doing so in 2006, in comparison to 60 per cent 2004, while only eight per cent said that they reviewed anything more than the first three pages.
Almost half were found to relaunch their search if they failed to find what they were looking for on the first page, while over a third (37 per cent) said that appearance at the top of search results reflected positively and suggested the company's leadership within its industry or category.
The study also revealed that search engine users looking for news, image, and video results tended to click on specialised content within general search results more than they did within vertical search results.
Robert Murray, president of iProspect, said: "Marketers have a great opportunity to claim more search shelf space by optimising their news, image, and video assets."
