Yahoo teams up with Google on OpenSocial

Search engine Yahoo has announced that it has joined forces with Google and MySpace on a new initiative to allow for photo-sharing and other social tools across the internet.

The Google-initiated OpenSocial Foundation, a not-for profit organisation, has been formed to encourage common coding standards for social applications. This would allow for more chats, games and media sharing on hundreds of websites.

On the company's blog, Yahoo vice president Wade Chambers said that they were now supporting the OpenSocial standard as it was "no longer a trial balloon - it's for real".

"We are taking this opportunity to help ensure websites and developers feel confident using OpenSocial as the building blocks for their new social apps.

"We can only imagine the possibilities of what creative developers and publishers will do with these tools."

Other members of OpenSocial include Friendster, hi5, LinkedIn, Ning and Orkut and Bebo, which are owned by Google. Facebook is not a member.ADNFCR-1536-ID-18524523-ADNFCR
